Wanted to post some “creepy” wines with fun cheese for the Halloween season this year. This Sauv “Block” is very mild compared to others. It’s more like a Chardonnay to me. Buttery, pear, sweet fruit, very low tannins, no acidity. But the cheese! Wow. Strong white aged cheddar. The wine balances well with a bit of cheese first. 🦇🧀🥂 — 3 days ago

Reserve St. Helena Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

After hearing of this for a while, I grabbed one of these a while back and decided to open as 2014 Napa cabs are generally pretty open knit right now. Great pedigree as the fruit was formerly sold to Harlan. Winemaker is TRB. This is their reserve bottle, which is a barrel select of their estate.

Sure does seem to have TRB’s signature style all through this wine, as I feel he has an amazing ability to pull the entire fruit spectrum (in terms of light red all the way to dark black) for Cabernet in the right sites. Right after opening, it filled the air with a lifted fruit profile...high toned dark chocolate dipped blackberries, blueberries, and baking spices like nutmeg, alongside floral violet notes. It’s rich on the palate without being flabby or too fruit forward. The darker fruits translate over...beautiful black cherries, but mostly ripe blueberries and freshly squeezed blackberries, followed by dark cocoa, espresso, toasted oak. Really nice acidity and fine grained tannins on the finish. Still youthful, but this can be enjoyed now with a couple hour decant.

Mountain Cuvée Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

Tried another ‘18. Blend of Cab Sauv, Cab Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot & Malbec, made by 30 year Chappellet winemaker Phillip Titus. Deep Ruby, purple edges, youthful aromas of black fruit, spices, floral and flinty notes. On the palate flavors of blackberry and black cherry with some vanilla and tobacco and herbal notes. Vivid acidity & firm tight tannins with long finish ending with a youthful character, a bit young, should benefit from bottle aging. — a day ago

Reserve Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Dark ruby in color with a purplish rim.

Fruity nose of blackberries, sweet plums, blueberries, violets, black currants, cedar, earth, vanilla, licorice, spices, chocolates, tobacco, mocha, alcohol, peppercorn and coffee.

Full bodied and bold with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry on the palate with blackberries, plums, cherries, currants, oak, vanilla, licorice, spices, tobacco, chocolates, light vegetables, mocha, peppercorn, leather and earth.

Long finish with round tannins and tangy raspberries.

This is another great Napa Cabernet. Well balanced and a little subdued, yet still showing Napa Cabernet characteristics. Not too extracted, which is nice to see.

This is from a great vintage, but still needs a few more years to become its own, although delicious now. A good sipping to share with friends.

Teeth staining color, so not a good choice for a first date.

Good by itself or with food. Good right out of the bottle, but definitely better after a couple of hours of airtime.

Duration Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

12’ Bure Family Duration. This pic is from Wine-Searcher. Threw out the bottle last night. Held onto this last bottle for an additional 18 months. Very much enjoying the 2012’s right now. Honestly, tasting better than ever.

This Cabernet combines power & finesse, with gorgeous supple flavors of blackcurrant, black cherry, blackberry, loads of sweet oak(not in a bad way) Full -bodied with low acidity. Without a doubt the best BURE I’ve enjoyed to date.

Excellent example. I was put onto this by @Paul T- Huntington Beach. Another excellent tip. If you don’t have eyeballs on his feed you’re missing out.
On the nose, it explodes with exotic fruits. Palate displays grapefruit, with a hint of pineapple and maybe passion fruits. While the finish presents a touch compressed, we love this. Tipping the scales at 12.8% abv, at $13 from KL, it’s criminal.

No. 77 Napa Valley Reserve Mt. Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon 2010


Dark ruby (almost black) in color with a reddish rim.

Strong nose of baked cherries, black plums, red currants, light cedar, vanilla, licorice, tobacco, eucalyptus, dark chocolates, spices, black pepper, pencil lead, dirt and herbs.

Medium plus in body and smooth, with medium plus acidity and long legs.

Dry on the palate with plums, cherries, sweet strawberries, currants, wood, spices, light vanilla, tobacco, light alcohol, espresso, earth, pencil lead, coke and peppercorn.

Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy raspberries.

This is a very tasty, and nicely aged, Cabernet Sauvignon from Mount Veeder in Napa Valley. Showing a great nose and a complex palate, with a nice mouthfeel.

Not a typical Napa Cabernet, and very unique for the region. A good quality wine with a pretty nose.

This 10 year old is still young and not showing its age much. Would be nice to revisit it in 3 years.

Needs 2 hours to open up properly, so be patient.

Tangy and good with food, too. I paired it with a charcuterie board of meats and cheeses. Great with the brie cheese.

1.5 hour decant(lots of cloudy sediment). A breathtaking dark purple color. On the nose: subtle notes of black fruit, floral, crushed rocks, vanilla, iron, metallic. Taste: fresh, rich, creamy wine with blackberry, dark cherry, smoke, pine tree, and a raspberry/cedar/slightly minty long finish. 1 hour decant(chunky and cloudy sediment). A regal inky dark ruby red color. On the nose: Subtle notes of jammy blackberry, floral, graphite, and cedar. Taste: Elegant, smooth, lush full body wine with jammy blackberry, dark cherry, spice, currants, leather and a chocolate espresso long dry finish.
