Ribolla Nero

Naturalmente Bio Sicilia Nero d'Avola 2018

First wintery Sunday with depressing cold drizzle. My response: home cooked Pasta Fagiole with soft Japanese yeast bread with lots of butter. What a wonderful comfort food match. The Etna Nero d’avola is young, juicy, and fruit-forward. Cassis, Boysenberry, and bright citrus notes. Medium weight, nice viscosity, and enough acidity to stand up to the tomato’s and good olive oil drizzle. Touch of green stems actually balances the fruit. Nice long finish and makes me consider picking up a few more for rustic pizza/pasta. — a day ago

Corax Pinot Nero (Blauburgunder) 2017

From our friends at Le volpe e l’uva, this is a tasty pinot nero from the Sudtirol-Alto Adige region in north central Italy. Reminiscent of a high-end, Village-level burgundy, this has terrific fruit on the palate, bright, vibrant acidity, and a nice finish. This probably goes for less than 20 euros at the shop, but would be bargain at twice that price! — 16 days ago

Orange One Tocai Friulano Blend

I wanted a bit more but this unfortunately froze in my now defunct wine fridge and some of the wine leaked pass the cork, a shame. All you expect from an amber, oxidized, nutty, savory, some caramelized peach. — 2 months ago

Lot 312 Nero d'Avola 2018

This Lodi Zinfandel carries a medium tint in the glass and smells of red fruit and black pepper. The palate is fruity with a savory note to go along with it. A zippy acidity is fresh, while the tannins are quite firm. My pork chop paired very well with it. — 2 days ago

Lyle Fass
9.2

Nose reminds me of so many things. Burgundian/German but uniquely Alto Adige as well. Fresh dead leaves, dusty cherry, floral, herbal, cherry, cherry flower. Hint of amaro type intensity, like one aroma from a Chinato. So unique. Textured and juicy. Calls back Liaison without the nattie character. Chiseled and precise but structured and young. In need of age. Perfect balance and very elegant. Complex and serious. Needs to open up. 9.2 for now. Long and sappy. — 16 days ago

Mendo Benchlands Zinfandel-Nero d'Avola Blend 2019

Best Martha to date. Her wines get interesting at this level, beyond Post Flirtation. Here she channels Sicily and projects Cali through two grapes she adores - Nero D’Avola and Zin.Dark brew of juicy fruits and toasted spice. Plums, Driscoll’s blackberries, ripe raspberries. Cinnamon and cardamom. — a day ago

@Josh Morgenthau I’d say comparative. Blackberries - sour and juicy the way they are in the grocery store vs wild caught which I think can be more concentrated flavor and sweeter

Makes sense! Have yet to try her wines. Would you seek this out or another cuvee for a first timer?

@Josh Morgenthau she makes wonderful wines. I would skip over her post flirtation line of wines and focus on the others. Her wines are maybe slightly more expensive than they should be but they are very good nevertheless.

Harmonium Sicilia IGT Nero d'Avola 2013

Beautiful hints of black plums and cedar on the nose. Tastes of dark plums, blackberries and dark cherries with hints of baking spices and black pepper accented by minerality and earthiness. A very nice Nero D’Avola. — 2 days ago

Like a crash course on what a natural wine should be...beautiful deep orange color, funky, earthy nose with an orange blossom surprise. Then lots minerality, bits of apricot, some tartness and a sprinkle of salt to keep it interesting. — 17 days ago

Noir de Mariette Pinot Nero 2018

Drinks like a young burgundy. Well balanced. Black cherry, mushrooms, and touches of white pepper. Great value at $14. 100 % Pinot Nero (Pinot Noir) — 3 hours ago
