Bonny Doon Vineyard

Vin Gris De Cigare Rosé Grenache Blend 2019

Pre-Covid vintage; what have these grapes of wrath provided unto us mere mortals? Pink and gold, excellent clarity. Strawberries in nose and mouth, hints of peach, apple, pear and lemon flavor, mineral finish. Acidity is fine; this ain’t watery to my palate, just “lightly flavored”. If you want a fruit-forward red fruit dominant Rosé, this is not your wine. Its charm is it’s different. Good for sipping, but not a great food wine, I’d think — 7 days ago

After Hours Rosé of Grenache 2020

Medium pink; medium plus intensity aromas of ripe strawberry, raspberry, rich potpourri (like a rich perfume), forest floor, sandalwood, coconut husk, vanilla; dry, medium acid, high alcohol, full body, medium plus intensity flavors consistent with aromas; hot, quite rich, creamy and ripe, decadent — 3 days ago

NOTSO Wine Co.

Phigment California Red Blend 2018

Color of bubbly purple, quite dark. Nose of dark fruits (cherry, currants, blackberry), aldehyde, tobacco leaves, powerful alcohol, not too shabby. Taste of ample acidity, plentiful tannins, oak, spicy sweetness, ripe grapes, and indeed some warm bourbon like note. Aftertaste of more warmth, note tobacco note, some more zesty and sweet note. I am quite happy with it. I am quite happy with this 2nd bottle even though the notes are slightly different. — 11 days ago

Antica Terra

Obelin Pinot Noir 2018

Wow. From Maggie Harrison at Antica Terra, this is one of the best ones I’ve had from that winery. It doesn’t quite have the depth and complexity of her top-end wines (e.g., Cerras)…but it is also spectacular at this young of an age (as opposed to the higher end ones, which I think need several years in bottle before they really start to sing). In this regard, this wine is kind of like an off-scale Rosso di Montalcino that you enjoy while you wait for the brunellos to come of age. This wine was fantastic. Amazing fruit, perfect balance, and expanded beautifully on the palate. Just terrific. — 14 days ago

Tupps Brewery

DDHIPA The Full Nelson

Cloudy yellow of old bones crowns the roiling trove. This one came in costume, as a peel reveals the sour ‘neon shades’ of its former life. Nelson Sauvin, you rascal! Prickly pear flavor suspended in a mucilaginous grapefruit, pomegranate, and lemon oil jell-o. Thin skin orange with pith, salty lime, peppery green grapes, and pine. Can’t quite put a finger on what makes this so dang enjoyable, but there it is. Sparkly, minerally, for sure, but tropical with crystalline pineapple, like a rocky wood that ends on a tropical beach. Eco-dichotomy. .

Forgot to post from the recent Domain Serene visit. Another outstanding pinot. Single vineyard, with poise and stunning complexity. Approachable now, but needs to sleep for a while. I was ready to drop some plastic, until I heard $210 per… — 8 days ago

A bit pricey...

So historically, top notch CA/OR chard/pinot producers have been ruffly a third of the cost of equitable/comparable Frenchie Burgundy juice. How does this slot in or (k)not?

@Scott Rose, this is an outstanding pinot. It’s only fault is that it lacks brand recognition (which is no fault, really). But I’m a consumer just like the rest of the sheep, and for that price, I want dancing women, too 🕺🏾😲

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

We were fortunate to visit Ceja Vineyards in April where we were introduced to the Ceja family’s gorgeous wines. 🙏

We wanted to open a bottle to celebrate and recognize National Hispanic Heritage month. Following are the notes we took at the time, which remain true today:

Ceja is a Mexican-American family owned winery producing wines from both Napa and Sonoma valleys. “In one generation the Ceja family has gone from immigrant vineyard workers to grape growers and winery owners.” 💪 🇲🇽 🇺🇸

We loved learning about the inspiring background of this winery and family’s devotion to excellence. 💕💕

The wines are designed to be paired with food (especially, though not exclusively, traditional Mexican cuisine), but are delicious on their own, too.

The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley is full, velvety, and rich with a lot of ripe blackberry, cassis, and black cherry 🍒 characteristics. Aged for 36 months in French oak, it has dark chocolate, nutmeg, and clove notes. Also leather and anise.

Delicioso! 👏👏👏 Salud 🤩

Martha Stoumen

Post Flirtation Red 2020

We’ve been eager to try this bottle from Martha Stoumen Wines after hearing so many wonderful reviews. 📝

We decided to pop and pair it with pesto pasta and grilled chicken, as we thought the vibrant, fruit-driven notes would complement the savory herbs and garlic flavors of the pesto. We also thought the flavor intensities would match up pretty well. It’s delicious! 🙌

This California wine has 54% Carignan and 46% Zinfandel, which were dry-farmed in Mendocino County and Oakley, respectively. 🍇 Martha Stoumen Wines pursues a low-intervention approach to farming the land and the resulting wines are known to be terroir-driven.

We gave this wine a slight chill before serving, which enhanced the freshness, and then enjoyed the evolution as the wine opened up. It is unfiltered and has a delicately hazy, pale purple appearance. 👁 This wine offers primary notes of black cherry, wild strawberry, pomegranate, violet, lavender, anise, also secondary notes of clove, nutmeg, and cinnamon. 👃 👄

We love the label art – it’s super joyful and beautiful! It was fun to learn that Martha Stoumen’s husband, Jon Patch, created this illustration and named it ‘post flirtation’ just after they had started dating. 💕💕

Boulevard Brewing Company

Stormchaser IPA

Lime and slate palate with an oceanic sensibility. Grapefruit zest, lemon-lime cola, grilled lemon and thyme. The nose is sweet tangerine and pronounced citrus, echoing the sentiment. Always a pleasure to chase this mixed issue. .

Reserve aged product from local craft brewery in downtown Phoenix. Amber brown in color, pinpoint bubbles, copious head on pour. Toasty caramel nose. Cherry, bourbon barrel and caramel flavors, slightly syrupy mouthfeel. Well made, complex. Good brewer who knows his craft working here — 10 days ago
