Ochota Barrels

a forest Pinot Noir

Like many I opened a bottle of ochota last week to toast the life of Taras Ochota who passed on Monday. I have long loved the Ochota wines and have felt lucky to have them in the Charleston market, but this “A Forest” Pinot was a gift from afar and one I  have held onto for a year knowing the right time would come to open it. Well, last week seemed perfect time to celebrate a person who was a leader in making natural wines that were vibrant, beautiful, and sound. Any article about Taras and his wife Amber brimmed with their positive energy, and I loved this quote from him that appeared in a Imbibe tribute:

‘We could make more,’ he said to a room full of journalists, sitting round his enormous kitchen table last year. ‘But then I’d have to work harder, and then I wouldn’t be drinking wine with you guys.

‘I just want to make wine and have a nice life.’

Here’s to a life well lived! ❤️

Soljans Estate

Barrique Reserve Pinot Noir 2015

This afternoon I have opened the 2015 Soljans Estate Barrique Reserve Marlborough Pinot Noir.

On the nose I am able to get ripe cherry, strawberry jam, cola, ckove, mushroom, some funk, wet leaves and forest floor.

On the palate there is ripe cherry, raspberry, cranberry, plum, clove, mushroom and an earthy component.

This wine is medium bodied with medium acidity and medium sandy tannins with a long earthy finish. I hope everyone's weekend went well and are doing well? We look forward to a wonderful week ahead and as always please stay healthy and safe. Nostrovia! 🍷🍷🍷🍷

Les Grands Champs Cuvée Unique Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2018

From a lieu dit surrounded by Gevrey. Definitely young but with a couple hour decant quite enjoyable and accessible. Tons of sweet cherry on the nose; aromatically really quite intense. Full on the palate, get more tannin than I was expecting, but very nicely balanced by a lot of acid. Enjoyed it with a roast chicken provencal but could have stood up to red meat too. Nice qpr at ~$30. Note this is not the “cuvee unique”, which apparently a 100% new oak bottling - this is the regular which is 85% old. — 3 days ago

Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir 2018

Just tried a third bottle over past 6 months. A light style Pinot, something I would find from OR, not Santa Barbara, however this bottle was a bit more pronounced in aromas and flavors. Medium Ruby with aromas of red fruits and spice. On the palate ripe raspberry and wild juicy cherry with cola, oak and earthy notes. Developing with integrated soft tannins, well defined, elegant with underlying richness, long finish ending with flinty mineral character. Outstanding value! — 3 days ago

Domaine Confuron-Cotetidot

Les Suchots Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2011

Drank over two days. Closed up to start and also very loyal to this producer’s style who picks very late. Powerful bodied and extracted but opens up with dark fruit, some spices, structure and powerful tannins that start to soften up. A nice bottle, but now very expensive for what it delivers and a style I now appreciate less and less. 89-90

Kistler

Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2008

David T
9.2

I’ve been picking up nicely aged Kistler’s off the secondary markets for between $50-$60. I have to say I’m pleased but, don’t understand why they go so under valued. I am not going to tell you Kistler makes the best Pinot Noirs. However, they make very good ones. Especially, when they hit 10 years in bottle properly stored. Maybe, it’s just the economy?

The body is heavenly round, full and lush with nice viscosity. The fruits are in fantastic shape. In fact, I would say peaking. Full range of; blackberries, dark cherries, both plums, raspberries, cherries, pomegranate and blueberry highlights. The baking spices nicely soften; cinnamon, nutmeg, clove and vanilla hues. Beautiful mixed fruit cola. Understated, round dry, crushed rock, delicate limestone minerals, shades of; tobacco, savory meats & mint, light dark spice with faint heat, hints sweetened mushrooms, dark, rich earth with bright florals that are; dark, red, purple & blue framed in violets. The acidity is spot on. The beautiful, elegant, well knitted & balanced finish exits with nice, soft persistence. Wire to wire a beautiful wine.

I thought I might get some smoke presence from the 2008 fires in Sonoma...it either was light & faded or never existed.

Still has another 4-5 years of solid drinking ahead.

Benjamin Leroux

La Piece Sous le Bois Blagny 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2017

Wow! — 10 days ago
