Long Rail Gully

Gentle Folk

Scary Gully Chardonnay 2021

Burgundian enough such that most on the table thought it was from either of the Montrachet villages. I didn’t quite place it there, but was close (St. Aubin). Lo and behold, it was from Australia. This just reaffirms my belief that great Chardonnay, and specifically Chardonnay, can be made outside of France. The wine itself was excellent - linear, mineral, and full of energy. Flavours of lemon peel, nectarine, almond meal, hay, fennel, and some vanilla cream. Textural with almost chewy bite to it. Pretty long finish. Superb, and definitely a bottle to revisit. — 2 months ago

Bakers Gully Syrah 2010

Meaty aromas with black cherry and currant fruit and black licorice. Plum and prune on the pallet with a note of dark chocolate. A touch of black pepper spice on the long and leathery finish. Powerful yet elegant. — 3 years ago

Similar notes to the Pipeclay Terrace except that Long Gully is sweeter, bigger and more dense than Pipeclay. — 7 years ago

Frankland Estate

Rocky Gully Frankland River Shiraz 2013

Nice color of shades of purple, a bit hazy, and a bit bloody red. Nose of nice leather, sweet oak, dried strawberry, sugar plum, and cherry. Taste is warm, leathery, cranberries, zesty, dried strawberries, and a tiny bit of hickory note. Aftertaste is smooth, basically no tannins, a bit zesty, a bit oaky, and medium long. She is lighter compared to usual Shiraz from Aussie. Overall, she is a tasty wine and enjoy her now. — 7 years ago

Hermitage Syrah 1996

1996 vintage. Explosive out of the glass. Tobacco, leather, rose petal, and dried cranberry. Black tea leaves and constantly evolving spice and aromatic red fruit. Acidity provides a rail to balance fine tannin very long finish. I am sure I could write another paragraph 15 minutes from now. — 9 years ago

Château Musar

Bekaa Valley Obaideh Merwah 2013

My first experience with the 2013 Musar Blanc. I opened this bottle about an hour prior to service and enjoyed over the next three hours. Served at cellar temperature. The wine pours a bright golden color with medium, almost medium+ viscosity. The nose is…fascinating. Notes of lemon, herbs, marigolds, honey, marmalade, cloves, bandaid, and something that reminded me of an old rail yard. No cap. On the palate, lemon curd, slightly underripe star fruit, green herbs, a bitterness that reminds of walnut skin…the wine is really wooly, with a long smokey and rather saline finish. Medium+ acid that builds with air. This is about as Musar as it gets. Rustic, wild and irresistible all the same. I’m sure this bottle isn’t without flaw but that’s sort of what you get with Musar. Anyway, we had no trouble finishing off the bottle. It should be noted that the wine improved with air. I’ll hold my remaining bottle until at least 2028. — 2 years ago

Ancient Vine Long Gully Road Sémillon 2017

This wine is outstanding. So soft and slight, but full of delicate nuance and depth. On the nose there’s that lovely petrol or rubber note that opens you up to the sweetness of the wine, but when you taste the attack is so gentle and the acidity so perfectly balances the rounder fruit notes that you end up with this magically cleansing lively mouthfeel. Ideal for Asian cuisine. This wine is perfect for adventurous curious drinkers to bring to their friends who swear they only like Sauv. Blanc. Dry and crisp enough that they’ll like it, but different enough that they’ll experience something new. — 4 years ago
