Vignolo Terre Siciliane Syrah 2013

Lyle Fass

Nose is wild and funky. Verset like immediately comes to mind. It’s wild and funky but also has class, deep Syrah character and refinement. Some VA, some funk, some elegance, leather, berry fruit, some brett, it is all there and coming out to play but somehow it works. Way better than the ghastly 12’s. Palate is juicy and rustic, with nice juiciness and purity. Definitely get a Sicilian vibe from this. Tinny but in a good way. Wild, rustic and pure. Juicy with good fruit and lovely tannins. Rustic, charming and juicy. Long. No finesse but it makes up for it in charm. Very good. — a day ago

Lot 312 Nero d'Avola 2018

This Lodi Zinfandel carries a medium tint in the glass and smells of red fruit and black pepper. The palate is fruity with a savory note to go along with it. A zippy acidity is fresh, while the tannins are quite firm. My pork chop paired very well with it. — 8 days ago

Piccolo Fiore Terre Siciliane Rosso

V enjoyable. Plenty of fruit without being rich. Enough tannin to keep it honest. Nice on its own. Did not go as well with a tomato based sauce but not too much clash. Good value for $8 — 10 days ago

Vigna Grande Vinding Montecarrubo Syrah 2017

Lyle Fass

Big, expressive nose, roasted notes but still fresh, charcoal, gamey, meaty, olivey, ripe, spices, really not subtle and very exuberant aromas. Palate is juicy, concentrated and complex. Structured, sappy and deep. Long, finesse and linear. Best of these yet. Seems they look a leap between 12/13 and 17. 9.2 for now. Air will help. I’ll be back. — a day ago

Arianna Occhipinti

Siccagno Nero d'Avola 2017

Another delicious red wine from Arianna. Big and bold with ripe (almost stewed, but not overly prominent) red cherry, balanced with some grippy tannins and acidity. Better with some air. Served lightly chilled. Lovely wine with something for both the wine geeks, and the big-red-wine crew. Biodynamic, only 12.5 ABV, aged in 3000 liter casks. — 8 days ago

Love this slightly more “serious” cuvée from Occhipinti! Cheers! 🍷

Nero Ossidiana Sicilia IGT Red Blend 2016

I do love an island wine. The hint of salinity is a nice add to the light, bright fruit and flowers. — 3 days ago

Naturalmente Bio Sicilia Nero d'Avola 2018

First wintery Sunday with depressing cold drizzle. My response: home cooked Pasta Fagiole with soft Japanese yeast bread with lots of butter. What a wonderful comfort food match. The Etna Nero d’avola is young, juicy, and fruit-forward. Cassis, Boysenberry, and bright citrus notes. Medium weight, nice viscosity, and enough acidity to stand up to the tomato’s and good olive oil drizzle. Touch of green stems actually balances the fruit. Nice long finish and makes me consider picking up a few more for rustic pizza/pasta. — 8 days ago

Barraco (Nino Barraco)

Vignammare Grillo

100% Grillo from Sicily, vines only 30m from the sea in limestone and red soil, and you really taste the salinity. 11.5% abv . Native yeast, 1d skin contact in steel, then aged in concrete. No added SO2. — 4 days ago

Harmonium Sicilia IGT Nero d'Avola 2013

Beautiful hints of black plums and cedar on the nose. Tastes of dark plums, blackberries and dark cherries with hints of baking spices and black pepper accented by minerality and earthiness. A very nice Nero D’Avola. — 9 days ago
