Robert Craig Winery

Affinity Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

Sex in a bottle. The good kind. Everyone has their own favorite California winery, but for me there’s no doubt. It’s Robert Craig. Deep purple with cherry red undertones in the glass. How about this nose? It starts with ripe red fruit up top. Cherries and raspberries and fresh strawberries oh my! Warm spices and créme de cassis follow that up. The barest hint of vanilla tops it all off.

I love the funk. I live for the funk, I die for the funk. But that’s not the water that Robert Craig swims in. Completely eschewing dirty funk, this is a profoundly clean and immediate wine. Full bodied but with none of the seemingly innate flabbiness of other Cabernet dominated blends. Pure sexy sleekness instead here.

Blueprint Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

A blend of 83% Cab Sauv, 11% Merlot, and 6% Petit Verdot made by Philippe Melka. Deep Ruby with purple hues, aromas of black and blue fruits with herb spice and earthy notes. On the palate blueberry, blackberry and plum flavors with cacao, leather and tobacco. Firm tight grippy tannins, well balanced integrated nicely with smoky oak, long finish ending with fruit, spice and earthy character. Too young, keep corked for a few years. — 4 days ago

Estate Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2018

Almost forgot I had opened this. Found along with 2016's at Local Hyvee Wine Dept! Very nice SB..but the evolution from the 18 to the 16 is worth the wait! Hourglass Sauvignon Blanc always a favorite! Not sure how these (16 & 18) are selling for $18.99 a bottle at previously mentioned Hyvee..But okay! 🤷‍♂️ — 3 days ago

First time trying to this and wow, it was dynamite 💥 Explosive, juicy black and blue fruits, dense dark chocolate shavings lathered in frothy espresso, drops of Mexican vanilla extract, and Christmas spice cake.

James Cole

Napa Valley Petit Verdot 2009

David T

It’s good to follow Winemakers. I follow Charles Hendricks. However, Charles last James Cole vintage was 2013.

100% Petit Verdot in anyone’s hands is tricky. This 09 made by Charles is elegant young...just as it is now. It’s just rounder & softer after 9 1/2 years in bottle. It still has teeth but, complex & floral with dark, grippy tarry, round tannins. The darkest of roasted & used expresso grounds, dry earth with dark & brilliant florals. Beautiful acidity and elegant persistent finish.

This offering has another 10-15 of good drinking ahead. Properly stored of course.

Hall Wines

Exzellenz Sacrashe Vineyard Red Wine 2010

Shay A

This was my contribution for a 10-yr retrospective of Napa cab with a local group. All wines (16 of them) were tasted blind. Others of note were Cardinale, Larkmead, Bryant Family, Vineyard 29, Corra and Jacquelyn To-Kalon.

My first experience with this wine, and when I acquired it, I wasn’t aware it was a 100 pointer. I’ve had many Hall wines but this is definitely their most structured wine. It’s fruit forward but in no way close to their other offerings. At 100% cab, it drinks like it. I let this breathe from bottle for about 2hrs before it was thrown in a decanter for another 2-3hrs and consumed. I had a splash at pop and it was crazy coiled, underripe and dusty. When I came back to it later (albeit blind, so I’m looking at my notes), it sported dark fruit on both the nose and the palate. Dark cocoa dipped black cherries, ripe blueberries and blackberries, as well as cassis and espresso aromatically. There was also a bit of a lavender/floral note that gave it a unique quality. On the palate, it eventually smoothed out beautifully, but was powerful the entire time. Dense and rich with added notes of fig, baking spices, and cocoa dusted fruits. One of those wines that makes you think overpowering, but then dials it down to silk on the finish. I think this is just entering a prime drinking window. Bummer I don’t have more.

Dalla Valle Vineyards

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2007

A dark crimson purple. Nose - blackberry floral, crushed rocks, vanilla spice and floating scents of metallic and eucalyptus. Taste - bold blackberry-cherry sits nicely on the pallet absorbing it’s rich creamy flavor. It’s fresh flavors also linger with hints of licorice, vanilla cream, cedar and tar. Tannins are well integrated with a medium plus raspberry subtle smoke minty finish. A delight to end the week! — 8 days ago

Dominican Oaks

Intarsia Napa Valley Red Blend 2015

This is a nice red blend from Napa Valley. Doesn't show like one, but it is drinking very nicely now.

Was probably better a couple of years ago, but I really enjoyed the nose. A nice entry level to Napa reds.

Dry on the palate with medium plus acidity.

Showing red and black fruits with chocolates, earth, light vegetables, pencil lead, peppercorn and tobacco.

Needs 90 minutes to open up properly, but lost it pretty fast.

13.5% alcohol by volume.

89 points.

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

Classic Bordeaux style blend from several estate vineyards. Aged for 19 months in French Oak. Deep Ruby with purple edges, aromas of fresh berry fruits with cedar and spice. On the palate sweet cherry, blackberry and blueberry fruit, with savory oak & cacao notes. Tannins were smooth but tight, with an earthy herb touch on the long finish. Faust wines do not disappoint, even when young. Nice! A Fav! Great Value! — 3 days ago

Estate Grown Cave Fermented Lake William Red Bordeaux Blend 2012

Celebrating 6 years of wonderful marriage with my beautiful bride, @Krystal Vento

This was my first good bottle of Jarvis and I was very impressed. It took about 1.5-2 hours to finally open up but once it did it was singing. Highly expressive notes of eucalyptus, juniper, sage, plums, blackberries, pipe tobacco, and boysenberries.

Try the Chardonnay’s from them. Especially if you enjoy an occasional new world chard.

One of my favorite producers, and a total must visit when in the valley. I agree with @David L about their Chardonnay (the unfiltered finch hollow is magical, but expensive). Their merlot may be my favorite in all of Napa.
