The Modern Syrah 2017

A Santa Barbara County Proprietary Red Wine. Unfiltered and unfined. Entirely constructed of Estrella-clone Syrah from two ends of the Santa Rita Hills and a sprinkling of Viognier. Native-yeast fermented with 40% whole cluster inclusion and raised in large neutral barrels for 26-months. Matthias’ expression of great Syrah from a great Syrah growing region, cool coastal vineyards north of Santa Barbara. Recommended to a little above cellar temperature.

Young boysenberries. Steeping Darjeeling tea. A hint of barbecue smoke drifts by.

The color of a deep burgundy Chrysler Cordoba. Big, velvety mouthfeel, but not Corinthian leather.

Taste: Black cherries, just before 100% ripe. A touch of blueberry pie, but savory, not sweet. Finish: A finish of black pepper with a touch of cocoa nib at the last few touches of finish. Juicy, bustling tannins right to the point where you think they’re a touch too bold, but then the finish reaches over and says “I believe you were mistaken”.

Jazz trumpeter Jeremy Pelt with the track “I’ve Just Seen Her” on his album “The Art of Intimacy”. The Jazz Crusaders with the track “Young Rabbits” from their “Festival Album”, 1966, recorded live at the Newport and Pacific Jazz Festivals.

Dark Blossom California Grenache 2011

2011 Vintage. 15.7% Alcohol. What can follow a SQN Rose? More SQN! This Grenache was velvet on the tongue. Finally made a withdrawal at the Wine Bank! — 2 days ago

Concrete Field Blend White

Normally I don’t post #samples, but this one combined so much esoterica tied up nearly in a bow by a kind human and winemaker: an amphora aged white field blend of 25% Blaufrankisch, 25% Arbiuriou, 25% zweigelt, 13% Savignan Rose, 5% Gruner, 5% Melon de Bourgogne, 2% Petite Arvine and it doesn’t suck. Yes, definitely gimmicky and natty, but in addition to the expected kombucha and bruised apple notes, it has a really pleasing limestone mineral character, along with an exciting texture and tension. Lower on the acid spectrum though... — 21 days ago

Dirty & Rowdy

Familiar California Mourvedre 2019

Hits on everything. The fruits, the woods, the meats. It’s what you get when you pair a great California winemaker with his best grape.

Hardy Wallace makes beautiful things happen with Mourvèdre.

Murky, fresh pressed wild blueberries, raspberries, strawberries. Salty thick cut beef jerky. Coffee, cocoa, rosemary stems.

Plush and classically balanced like a real-life checkbook.

Bruiser Punxsutawney Blackberry Blueberry

This wine comes from Punxsutawney, PA and was purchased on groundhogs day, 2017. It has a wonderful fruit flavor and is noted as a blackberry and blueberry wine. Its similar in taste to Jazzberry but smoother. Love it! — 13 days ago

Gallinita California Rosé Blend 2014

@Shay A No surprise as Maggie Harrison (Antica Terra) was working with Manfred at SQN prior to venturing out north.

@Joseph Barsky : Yes, been a fan of hers for a while. Add in Andremily, and that’s one heck of a SQN minded group!

Can also add Brandon Sparks-Gillis at Dragonette to the SQN alumni list.

Caduceus Cellars

The Diddler Merkin Vineyards White Blend 2017

70/30 blend of Malavasia Bianca and Albariño from my home state of Arizona. Grapes from Willcox, vinted in Jerome, bottled in Camp Verde. That’s a lot of trucking, folks. Yellow-green, excellent clarity, clean nose. Floral, honeycomb and citrus flavor, almost tart, almost dry, apricot-citrus finish with some skin astringency. 13.2% alc/vol suggests early harvesting. Exceeded my expectations. Present from my brother who had similar feelings about the wine, saying “You’ve got to try this”. Not great, but much better than you’d think — 8 days ago

Cloud Break Wines

California Chardonnay 2018

Color of bubbly light gold. Nose is a trio of roasted nuts, mineral, and ripe tropical fruits, like mangoes, and a bit oaky note. Nose is nice. Taste shows good long lasting acidity, citrusy, oak, a bit salty mineral. Quite light as the fruits notes are not pronounced. Aftertaste of good quality acidity and some more mineral. — 2 days ago

Chenin Blanc 2019

Fresh off the FedEx...laser focused, pure pleasure... imagine forgetting to sugar your fresh squeezed lemon/lime juice...then adding 50% of your usual. Pucker up and embrace the vibrant acidity, the lip-smacking medium weight, the 12% ABV, and the long 30 second finish. Not a great wine, but so much pure fun... and it “tastes so frigging good.” Bravo Hardy et al! — 9 days ago

Ok... maybe I wrote too soon. Some of the bright Lemonhead flavor shades into slutty, cheesy, mushroomy Funk...92-94.
