Sandlands Vineyards

Lodi Zinfandel 2018

A gorgeous bouquet of bright bramble fruit, anise, and flowers. On the palate, I found this to be quite snappy! Brambles again with licorice and minerals. Medium tannins and high-ish acid. A pleasurable finish. This would work very well with a wide range of meals. At 14.4% ABV, this is very modest for a Lodi Zinfandel...and quite possibly the best I’ve ever had from this area known for its bulk rather than its quality. This proves the area’s potential with aplomb. The fruit for this bottling comes from Sandland’s own Kirschenmann Vineyard, located in the Mokelumne River AVA, which was planted 105 years ago. The soil there is mostly silica so the environment is naturally resistant to phylloxera. As a result, the vines are ungrafted and hence, own-rooted. — 6 days ago

Cade

Estate Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

David T
9.3

We drove up Howell Mountain to get to Cade two Sundays ago. What we witnessed was a horror show of fire damage. It’s hard to see nature destroyed in such a fashion. What was worse were all the brick chimneys only standing where there were once a home or a winery building.

Glass fire note. The fire investigation revealed the fire was started by a Cakebread electric fence short. An additional saddening note is Dolores Cakebread, the co-founder of Cakebread Cellars died shortly after the Glass Fire started. She was 90. No way to know if the stress of the fire factored into her passing.

The Howell Mountain was showing better than the Estate...rounder & a touch softer. The tannins were big, grainy, meaty, tarry & dry. This needs another 8 years in bottle to shine. I think at that point, it will push more 94-95. Ripe; blackberries, black raspberries, black plum, plum & dark cherries. Showing big wood as well...like sucking on a wood plank. Used dark expresso grounds, leather, graphite, dry tobacco, dry brush, dark chocolate, caramel, dark spice, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla, some black licorice notes. dry, crushed rock powder, dry top soils with fresh, dark, red & purple flowers. The acidity is nicely executed. The finish will take time. It’s good, well balanced but, showing little of the integration I prefer.

Photos of; Cade Estate vines, outside patio tasting area, infinity wall and their Estate Cabernet fruit unharvested. Sadly, about 80-85% of the 2020 Napa Valley Cabernet fruit will never see bottling.

I really like Cade’s Howell Mountain. Great review. The fire destruction is so sad.

Curly Flat

Pinot Noir 2013

We last had a bottle on 11th July 2020 and this time it showed better. Red savoury fruits mainly cherry and a plum skin note. Still with that burnt bracken note which is not unattractive. On the palate like Bass Phillip but more succulent. The Macedon Ranges just north of Melbourne is a proven good area for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay - a neighbour being the highly credentialed Bindi Wines. — 11 days ago

Tenuta Caparzo

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2014

Tried about 6 mos ago. The name of the estate comes from "Ca' Pazzo", shown on ancient maps. Estate covers an area of 190 hectares, 54 which are vineyards, 4 are olive groves, 87 which are wooded and 45 are planted with new vines. Deep Ruby with a berry fruit aromas blossom and smoke, aged for 2 years on oak. On the palate cherry & strawberry flavors, with leather, cacao and tobacco notes. Lively acidity, fine approachable tannins, long ending with spicy oak finish. Nice! — 8 days ago

Beckstoffer to Kalon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

David T
9.3

The fruits are clearly Beckstoffer to Kalon but, they showed a little dull the day we tasted.

On the nose; ripe, lightly perfumed floral, dark currants & fruits of; blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, black raspberries & creamy raspberries. Cinnamon, nutmeg, vanillin, light, dark spice, forest floor with fresh, dark florals.

The entry glides over the palate with juicy fruits of; blackberries, blueberries, dark cherries, strawberries, black raspberries & creamy raspberries. Cinnamon, nutmeg, vanillin, caramel, light, dark spice, forest floor, dry clay, soft leather, saddle-wood boarding to cedar & fresh & dry tobacco. It’s fairly closed and perhaps would have shown better with more time in the individual decanters. Wire to wire it’s good...not necessarily stunning yet, shows promise. Florals that are fresh & slightly withering; dark, red, blue & purple. The acidity is beautiful. The finish is round, rich, lush, well structure, balanced & elegant.

AXR Winery

ritchie vineyard Chardonnay 2018

David T
9.3

The Ritchie is one of the more pleasurable Napa/Sonoma Chardonnay’s I’ve had. The fruit is very good and made by Winemaker-Jean Hoefliger...who has a French background & goes easy on the new oak.

The body is thick and round with nice viscosity. Green apple, lemon, lime candy, overripe pineapple, just a touch of buttered popcorn, caramel, soft wood notes and backbone, butterscotch, delicate chalkiness, limestone & volcanics with yellow lilies, spring flowers and mixed greens. Full round acidity. Beautifully polished, elegant & s well balanced finish that persists nicely.

The tannnins in all their 2017 Cabernets were grainy big, dry & dark tarry. Blackberries, black raspberries, black plum, creamy raspberries, dark cherries, plum, fresh roast, dark chocolate, vanilla, cinnamon, clove, some nutmeg, medium, dark spice, graphite, tobacco, youthful and showing plenty of wood with dark, red, purple, some blue flowers set in violets & lavender. The acidity was quite nice. The structure, tension, length & balance are good but, need about 8 years in bottle to start to shine. Showing promise on finish but this is still a very youthful/primary.
