Vigna'ngena Vermentino Di Gallura 2020

A superbly-crafted multi-layered Vermentino with great intensity and striking character. Slightly bracing stone fruit, balanced by a second layer of subtle tropical notes and followed by very herbaceous finish. Mint, ginger and white pepper linger very persistently. Great tension of firm minerality and rounded mid palate. This is just about the finest expression of Vermentino I’ve had. Not the greatest value at $40, so I reserve my recommendations for serious lovers of this variety and of more esoteric Mediterranean whites. — 10 days ago

Very surprising to find this wine so alive after 13 years. Though less intense now and clear signs of aging: caramel and some ‘wet chalky cellar’. But also very floral, yellow fruit, laurel and rosemary. This wine has a floral nose, but that does not shortchange the minerality. There is a good bit of lemon and salinity in the mix, too. The palate shows the citrus and minerals strongest, with a very nice bit of acidity. Extremely nice, actually. I should have had some seafood with it, but it was cream of mushroom soup day, with some rice on the side. It paired quite well. — 6 months ago

You know, I have no idea what the eff this is or what in the naming is actually identifying (“isola dei nuraghi”), but this one is scintillating. At first, the entry was pleasant and red fruity and quickly went to lapsang souchong (which I hate), but the character really changed like a chameleon several times. There are candied caramelized pig fat notes, and some grippy haminess, and some mulled spice notes. This would probably be a great pizza wine. Goes well with chocolate. Eenteresting. — 9 months ago
